Financial innovations in history

Graduate students are invited to apply for the Tenth Summer School to be held in Venice, 28 June – 2 July 2010, on the topic Financial innovations in history. The Summer seminar consists of a week-long intensive international workshop held by internationally renowned experts and provides a forum for discussion of key issues and work in progress in financial history. The following key speakers have been invited to the 2010 edition:

Carlo Brambilla (Università dell’Insubria, Varese), Pierluigi Ciocca (Università La Sapienza, Rome), Øyvind Eitrheim (Norges Bank, Oslo), Marc Flandreau (Institute des Hautes Études Internationales de Genèva), Harold James (Princeton University), Larry Neal (University of Illinois Urbana Champaign), Mary O’Sullivan (Wharton School, Philadelphia), Loriana Pellizzon (Università Ca’ Foscari, Venice), James Tracy (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis)

Aim and Contents

The 2010 Summer School is a week-long intensive seminar designed to bring together a pool of international lecturers and graduate students to discuss key issues in financial history. This year the focus will be on financial innovations leading to economic change in historical perspective. Lecturers will present relevant case studies from a wide range of historical and geographical backgrounds, documenting and discussing the impact of financial advancements on credit organisations and economic activities.Scholars interested in attending are welcome. Pre-session materials and reading suggestions will be made available to participants in the program.

Main topics:

  • Financial systems in early modern Europe
  • Money and monetary systems
  • International capital markets
  • Financial innovations in the nineteenth century

Structure

Lectures will be held by international scholars. Main topics will be analysed in greater detail and discussed in the group. Student participants will have the opportunity to present and discuss their own research in special sessions.

Pre-session materials and reading suggestions will be made available to those enrolled in the program. All sessions will be conducted in English and proficiency in spoken and written English is expected.

The Department of Economics of the University of Venice “Ca’ Foscari” will host this year event in its facilities located in Cannaregio, 873 S. Giobbe. Successful applicants will be charged a registration fee of €200, including participation in the course, full accommodation in single or double room, and meals during weekdays. Travel expenses will not be covered. Two scholarships will be available for outstanding candidates who are not covered by other grants.

The Summer Seminar is open to 20 graduate students with a strong background in economics and history.
